Amharic Translation Services
DHCTranslations translates Amharic documents in the US, and two things are settled before the text: the calendar, which runs seven or eight years behind the Gregorian one, and the name, which carries no inherited surname at all. A certificate is $54, and the statement and the PDF are part of that figure.

What a certified Amharic translation costs
Certified translations start at $54 per document: from $0.12 per word after the first 400 words into English, and from $0.14 per word for English into another language, with some pairs quoted higher.
Certification is the translator's signed statement, and it is included in the price.
A translation for USCIS, a US court or a US university is certified by the translator's signed statement, and nothing further is added to the quote.

What a certified Amharic translation is checked for
The calendar and the naming pattern are where a US reader most often loses the thread, so both are explained on the certificate itself rather than in a covering email. The order is read with that note beside the text, which is why a bare conversion with no explanation is not enough here.
What the certification includes
- Signed statement of accuracy: the translator's name, signature and date, their CIOL or ITI membership number, our company stamp and our contact details.
- Both calendars, on every date: the Ethiopian date is printed with its Gregorian equivalent beside it, and the year gap is stated, because it is seven or eight years depending on which month the date falls in.
- The patronymic is identified: the second element is named as the father's given name and the third as the grandfather's, so neither is read as an inherited surname it is not.
- Certified PDF: the certified file is emailed at no extra cost, which is what a US filing accepts. A printed set can be arranged if a receiving body insists on paper, and is quoted per order.

Three names, thirteen months, and a year that turns in September
An Ethiopian name is a given name followed by the father's given name and the grandfather's, so nothing in it is an inherited surname and a form asking for one is asking for a name the document does not have. Dates are the other half of the problem: the Ethiopian year has thirteen months, begins in September, and is numbered seven or eight below the Gregorian year, so a date left unconverted lands in the wrong year on a filing.

Three features of an Ethiopian file are worth knowing before it is sent. A certificate reissued years later usually repeats the original registration date rather than the date it was printed, so the two dates on the page are not a contradiction. The registration number is often handwritten, and a handwritten figure is transcribed as written even where it looks like a clerical slip. And where an English line has been typed onto the form beside the Amharic, the two are translated and any disagreement between them is stated rather than quietly settled in favor of one.
What our clients say
Rated 4.9/5 from 314 verified reviews for USCIS submissions, court filings and credential evaluations.
“Both the student copy and the university transcript were translated together, with the marking explained, and the admissions office had everything it asked for.”
Hiwot G.
“My wife's father's name was carried through exactly as the certificate had it, and the note explaining that it was not a surname stopped the form being queried.”
Dawit M.
“The woreda certificate gave my date in the Ethiopian calendar and the translator printed both versions, so the caseworker could see the conversion rather than take it on trust.”
Selamawit T.

Frequently asked questions
DHCTranslations handles Amharic documents in the US, including district birth registrations, resident identity cards and university papers, and each translation carries a statement signed by the translator who produced it.
The three elements are the given name, the father's given name and the grandfather's. The translation keeps them in that order and says which is which, so whoever fills the form can see where the patronymic starts rather than guessing from the shape of the name.
DHCTranslations charges $54 for a document up to 400 words, then $0.12 per word into English or $0.14 from English into Amharic. The statement and the emailed PDF arrive with the document rather than as an extra.
The Ethiopian year begins in September and has thirteen months, and its number sits seven or eight below the Gregorian one depending on the month. Each date is printed with both, so a reader can check the conversion instead of taking it on trust.
It is the card issued by the neighborhood administration, recording who lives where and who the holder's father is. It is worth translating beside the birth registration, because it often carries the residence history that a filing asks about separately.
Ethiopian universities commonly keep the original diploma and issue the graduate a student copy to hold. Either can be translated, and the certificate states which of the two was worked from, since an evaluator may ask later.
USCIS requires the full text in English and a statement signed by the translator, which every order carries. Send the whole certificate rather than the first page, because a reissued paper repeats an older registration date that a reader needs to see.
An authentication stamp proves the paper is genuine; it does not name the person who translated it. USCIS wants the translator identified, so an authenticated copy is useful beside the certified translation but does not replace it.
The grade 12 leaving certificate and the university record are translated with every subject and mark intact, and DHCTranslations adds a note on the Ethiopian grading so the evaluator sets the equivalence rather than a translator.
Yes. DHCTranslations charges $0.14 per word from English into Amharic, written by a native speaker of the language rather than adapted from a related Ethiopian language.
