Welsh Translation Services

Welsh to English and English to Welsh translation for public bodies, their suppliers and private clients. Bilingual policies, forms and patient information go into Welsh under the language standards, while Welsh certificates, court orders and records are translated into English where the receiving body is outside Wales.

DHCTranslations works in both directions. English policy, consultation, form and patient-information work is drafted into Welsh for bodies operating under the Welsh language standards, and Welsh certificates, court orders, transcripts and correspondence are translated into certified English where an authority in England, Scotland or overseas needs the English text. From £40.

    Pricing

    What Welsh translation costs

Certified translations start at £40 per document: from £0.09 per word after the first 400 words into English, and from £0.10 per word for English into another language, with some pairs quoted higher.

Notarisation, where the receiving body asks for it, is quoted separately because it depends on the document and on notary availability.

FCDO apostille is available with our Express Service (usually 6-7 working days) or Urgent Service (usually 3-4 working days). Both are estimates: the real time depends on the document, the language pair and the level of certification, and is confirmed in your quote.

How a Welsh Job Runs: Three Steps

An English policy being translated into Welsh and a Welsh certificate being translated into English take the same three steps, with the terminology settled before any drafting starts.

    Both directions covered

Welsh into English, and English into Welsh

English into Welsh is checked for terminology: the same term has to read the same way on page one and page forty. Welsh into English is checked line by line against the original, because the office receiving it has only the English to work from.

    What a Welsh order includes

    • Signed statement of accuracy: the translator's name, signature and date, their CIOL or ITI membership number, our company stamp and our contact details.
    • Glossary first: a Welsh job starts with an agreed term list, so one concept reads the same way across every document.
    • Mutations kept: treiglad forms and place-name pairs are reproduced as printed rather than normalised into English.
    • PDF and post: the certified PDF is emailed at no extra cost; printed copies are optional, by first class or tracked post.

Prices are per document and start at £40 — see what a translation costs.

    Welsh documents

Both directions, and the names on the paper

Welsh has official status in Wales, so the work runs both ways: English policy and patient information drafted into Welsh, and Welsh certificates or court orders rendered into English where a body outside Wales has to act on them. The table sets the records a file usually contains against their English names.

    Birth certificate

    On the Welsh document
    tystysgrif geni

    Marriage certificate

    On the Welsh document
    tystysgrif priodas

    Death certificate

    On the Welsh document
    tystysgrif marwolaeth

    Statutory notice

    On the Welsh document
    hysbysiad statudol

    Application form

    On the Welsh document
    ffurflen gais

    Policy or strategy

    On the Welsh document
    polisi neu strategaeth

These are the names a Welsh certificate or public document carries, set against the English a receiving office will recognise. The same table works in both directions, because the work on this page runs both ways.

    Frequently asked questions

DHCTranslations works in both directions, from English into Welsh for public bodies, their suppliers and bilingual campaigns, and from Welsh into English for certificates, court orders and academic records. Work starts from a scan or an editable source and comes back as a PDF, certified where the recipient asks for certification.

Welsh documents are quoted from £40 per document, and longer files from £0.09 per word into English. English into Welsh starts at £0.10 per word once the first 400 words are passed, because drafting and checking a new Welsh text takes a pair of linguists.

Short certificates are usually completed the same day when the order and cleared payment arrive before 4pm on a working day. Longer policy sets are scheduled with a delivery date you approve before work starts, and later or weekend orders begin on the next working day.

Usually, yes. UK guidance normally asks for a translation only where a document is not in English or Welsh, so a Welsh original is accepted as it stands. We translate it when the receiving body is outside Wales, when an overseas authority asks for English, or when an office wants an English copy on file; check the current guidance for the route.

Yes, and they are different jobs. English into Welsh is drafting under the language standards with an agreed glossary; Welsh into English is the translation of an existing record, usually certified. They are priced differently, because one is drafting and the other is translating.

Welsh language standards made under the 2011 Measure require bilingual service delivery, policy-making and record-keeping from bodies operating in Wales, and the Commissioner can place them on organisations delivering public services. Suppliers bidding for Welsh public contracts meet the same expectation.

A term list is agreed before drafting and applied to every file in the set, drawing on the client's own bilingual material and the national terminology source where a term is settled. One translator and one checker stay with the job, so a policy, its summary and its form use the same wording.

Mutation changes the opening letter, so Caerdydd may appear as Gaerdydd or Nghaerdydd, and every form is kept as printed. Place names travel as pairs, and older ap or ab patronymics are shown beside the surname the family later took.

No. Scans of each page are enough, including both sides of a certificate and the footer where a registrar signs. Anything certified is produced from the scan, and tracked paper can follow if the receiving office will not work from a PDF.

Yes. Where Welsh and English sit side by side, the version you nominate is treated as the source and the other is checked against it. The certificate records which text was used, which matters when the two columns differ.

Yes. Certificates, court orders, transcripts and official letters in Welsh are translated into English and certified with a signed statement, which is what a court, university or embassy outside Wales asks for. Pricing starts at £40 per document, with files beyond 400 words at £0.09 per word.

Yes. Policies, consultations, forms, patient information, website copy and signage are drafted in Welsh, with terminology agreed first and the register matched to the audience. English into Welsh is quoted from £0.10 per word beyond the first 400 words.
