Being a freelancer is a great job for those who would like to have freedom, not have to go to the office every day and it gives you the ability to schedule your time in order to meet client deadlines.
What Are The Required Language Skills?
In order to be successful in translation it’s a prerequisite to be fluent in the source language (the language you are translating from) and to be a native speak of the target language (the one that you are translating into). You should of course be confident and skilled at writing in your own native language.
Normally it is not advised to attempt to translate into a language that is not your native tongue. There are exceptions for this where we will be able to proofread the English to make sure that everything is 100% correct. 99% of the time our translators only translated into their mother tongue however we are able to have native English speakers proofread if the target language is English.
Of course, if you have spent time living or working in the country practicing your language skills then this would be a big plus.
What Are The Educational Requirements For Translators?
Most of our linguists hold at least a degree in their chosen language. That being said more and more translators seem to hold a Master degree now. The biggest benefit of a Masters is that it can be more specific to Translations whereas a bachelor’s degree could be more to do with interpreting for example which is not the same thing.
